Welcome to the forum pss8300,
I've moved your question from the Jaguar Forums Advice / Feedback & Suggestion Centre section to the XK8/XKR section. This is the section to post tech questions about your model.
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

Can you tell by listening whether the motor is running while the antenna is failing to go down?

Possible antenna PM
For what its worth, my antenna started acting intermittently so I assumed it would need replacement. By this I mean it would try to raise but sometimes stop short.
I decided to give it a a good rub down with some dry lubricant. While doing this I also made an effort to straighten it out as the mast had developed an arc shape. After this the antenna has not had any problems. Based on this I think an occasional antenna lube is part of my growing PM list.

Once they get a bend or arc, it puts a lot of strain on the plastic teeth that raise and lower the mast and can start to break them off.
