Antenna Replacement

So the original antenna was bent and not retracting properly. I bought a replacement off ebay and now after only a couple of months, it looks like something inside it broke and it will neither extend nor retract and makes a godawful noise while it's trying to retract. I have another antenna on order (chrome this time. The black was already starting to rust) but if this one doesn't make it, I'm wondering what anyone else may have done to replace it. I'm thinking a short, black permanent antenna. I think antenna vandalism is probably less prevalent these days and motorized antennas seem a bit 20th century. Thoughts?

I've tried aftermarket replacement antenna masts in the past and gone back to Jaguar OEM. The aftermarket ones are a tempting price but the quality isn't there.
The only reason the antenna is designed to raise whenever the radio / CD / tape is switched on is for the UK TA (Traffic Announcement) system. If I were in the US, I'd have it disabled most of the time as it serves no purpose.
Many on the forum have gone with alternative antenna solutions. it's down to personal preference.

A few different ways you might go here. Questions:
- coupe or ragtop?
- do the stations you want to receive have strong signals in your area, or are some of them weak?

Hi Guys ,
Mine was a bit sticky for years , got fed up of lubing and cleaning every couple of weeks so I bought a complete brand new assembly off Ebay , works fine now but it's still antiquated when most modern cars seem to have the aerial built into the screen or spoiler ,
