Default Auto headlights fault

Hi all,
I have a 2002MY coupe and it has developed a problem with the auto headlights. I was driving at night and the auto headlights switched off while I was driving. I put them on manual for the rest of my journey.
For the return journey I put them back on auto but after a few seconds they switched off.
on both occasions I was in an area with street lights so I’m wondering if it’s the sensitivity of the sensor.

can it be adjusted? What should I be checking?

Thanks
Kevin

Kevin, btdt. The yellow wire on the pcb below the steering stalk as come loose. It just needs 2b resolved.

How can you check / prove? Turn auto on. Wiggle jiggle the turn signal stalk. Lights will cycle as connection makes and breaks.

If you can wait a couple of hours I'll link the photos for your convenience. If you need faster do advanced search on me. I can't right now.

While I've discussed this many times, there are 2 or 3 posts with a photo to help you know which wire goes where. Heads up: you will need a long thin soldering iron to reach the area without cooking something else.

BTW yes I'm 2nd guessing my memory- yellow? Well its in the posts. Stand by if u can.

There is a knob on the back (non mirror side) of the rear view mirror to adjust the auto-headlight sensitivity. Try adjusting that.

Thanks guys.
I waited until it was dark to go out and try it. Unfortunately it must be the wire because they go off when I move the stalk.

I will check out the links then see if I can fix it.

Thanks
Kevin

I finally got round to looking at this.
the grey wire had broken off terminal 4 on the back of the stalk switch.

Relatively straight forward after reading other posts about removing the steering wheel and column top cover.

Thanks

Thanks for the post - really great
I just fixed mine. The same problem (XKR 2002 coupe) - grey wire had come off as per your photo. I couldn't tell until I gave it a small push and it was still sitting in the same position but with no contact. My job was slightly complicated by different wire colours but in the end it didn't matter.
I managed to fix it without taking the steering wheel off but it was not easy. (I had read that its possible for the airbag to deploy if you aren't careful so I was too scared to remove the steering wheel!)
To give myself a bit of working room I added about 2" of new wire - first joining it to the connector then to the broken wire and applied heat-shrink
I also took the liberty of using my M4 x 0.7mm tap in the screw holes (in the alum casting) to open the holes up to normal - they were way too tight, which is why people have had trouble getting the screws out. Interesting that they are pozidrive, not phillips.

So my thinking is - if you have trouble with the auto lights not going off then look at the sensor end (mine is definately in the front of the mirror) and if they won't come on then the switch unit is the likely culprit
