Automatic headlights do not turn on

Picked up a used 05 XK8 and found out on the drive home the Auto headlight feature does not seem to be working. I can manually switch them on. When in Auto mode and it gets dark I see a message indicating Lights are Off. In searching through threads I find that one possibly is the the light sensor on the mirror. Another possibly is the switch located on the steering column. Looking at some of the wiring diagrams posted there are a couple of modules that may not be working correctly and causing my problem.
Does anyone have information on how to identify which one(s) is not functioning?

It is probably the switch, you should be able to test it if you take it out. If the switch is turned to auto and the instrument panel module does not know it, it will tell you that the light switch is off when the sensing unit indicates that the lights should be on. The switch is the first suspect.

I was experiencing a couple of things related to the headlights and it could have been the mirror sensor, the headlight module or the switch. Since I purchased a warranty with the car I decided to let someone who knows Jags diagnose and then I would decide if I would attempt the fix or not. Since this was a covered repair I let the repair shop fix. This also gave me an idea on how big a deal it was going to be if I needed to use the warranty again. Good news was the repair shop called and let me know even they were surprised on how easy they were to deal with.

When troubleshooting:
1. complete failure of the Auto Headlight function usually points to a mirror sensor fault.
2. warnings appearing in the Instrument Pack message centre about lights off means the mirror sensor is working but the steering column stalk switch is probably at fault.
