Default Balancer/pulley removal Help needed!

SO Ive finally had the time to start my 4.2 into 4.0 xkr. I am wanting to swap the front cover and balncer/pulley from my 4.0 to my 4.2 and dammed if I can get the balancer off. Is there some sort of trick? I just ordered the special jaguar tool as my attempt using a standard puller didn't fare to well. Do I need to heat it up or something? I popped one of the bolts in the balancer so Id perfer not to screw that up again

Many thanks!

Damon

I have removed 2 different balancers off in the last couple of weeks. I have a balancer removal kit that makes it a piece of cake. It has a lock tool so you can remove the balancer bolt wit h out the motor turning. After you get the bolt off you put a plug that comes with the kit in the hole that the bolt came out of. Then attach the puller and the balancer comes off slowly with no problems.

The first one I took off was on a 01xjr. I bent 2 pullers and still could not get It off. I found this puller kit on ebay and along with a timing tensioner installation kit. These tools have been extremely convenient.

I used a cheater bar, resting on a block of wood on the floor and cranked the engine a few seconds at a time. No damage at all.

I have the motor out of the car. Getting the bolt out was super easy...Ill have the proper jaguar puller to try out. Did you heat anything up?

And thanks!

I used no heat. Just the puller. You do have to make sure the puller is centered.

Another approach we used was to tighten the puller and leave it overnight. My guess is that the heat differential when the outside temp changed did the trick- came right off the next day.

Default Pictures are worth a thousand words...

Hi BobRoy,

Can you post pictures of the balancer removal kit or an eBay link for the kit? Was it more difficult to undo the balancer bolt than to pull the balancer out?

My indy mechanic used the starter motor trick and no heat to avoid damage to the rubber; apparently pulling the balancer off was not a big deal as compared to the nut removal, perhaps due to the Loctite that was applied to the bolt threads.

TIA

Neither the bolt or the balancer were that difficult to remove with the kit shown below. I did use a 4' pipe over my breaker bar to remove the bolt. I purchased the kits about a year or so ago. I don't remember the vendor or how much I paid for them. You can Google to see if anyone is selling them and for the best price. Sorry for the image being upside-down I'm not a photographer.

You only need to pull the damper a few millimeters forward and then SMACK it with a mallet to loosen the split-cone.

TSB 303-10 describes the procedure.

I rented the remover from Christoper's Foreign Car Parts.
