Unhappy Battery not charging - false error message

Hi, I've found a few old threads on this subject here, but not noticed a resolution.

I have a 1997 xk8 convertible with a new alternator as the battery was not charging (curiously the error message wasnt apparent then!). However now with new alternator fitted I have a red light on volt meter and an error message telling me that the battery is not charging even though it is charging perfectly well I have measured voltages approx 12.6 volts at battery when car not running and approx 14.2 volts when engine is running.

any ideas on this annoying error message, please?

Thanks in anticipation.

Mick

What is the indicated voltage on the voltage gauge? At idle ... at higher RPM?

Someone posted that their aftermarket replacement did the same thing.....replacing with a Jaguar unit fixed it.

Hi, thanks for the response. At idle the indicated voltage on the dashboard sits at 13v and stays there regardless of revs or load, but then it always has done.

Sounds normal to me. Only two possibilities come to mind:

- the gauge itself is bad, but that would be quite a coincidence.

- the new alternator's output is somehow "dirty" and that is triggering something in the gauge. Do you have access to an oscilloscope? Seeing the actual waveform of the alternator output would be worth a try.

Thanks, No I dont have an oscilloscope. I think it's more to do with the output on the lamp wire that goes in to the instrument panel or ecu I think. Goes in to the computer somewhere as this also stops the heated seats working (assume so you can only operate them when battery is getting a charge). Any ideas what signal this wire is meant to have on it (this being a 3rd wire in addition to the battery and ignition wires)?

Noone ever figured out why rebuilt Denso Alternators don't work on our cars. Does anyone know???? Going to have to get one at Welsh. The Only solution. Now the Heated Seats are inop. Crazy electrical issues. Worse than a dam spoiled wife. I just need to vent. Have a GREAT weekend everyone! Don't drink and drive. Or Drink.... but dont drive, if you want.

Always best to have your factory alternator refurbished with the proper Denso kit....
