Default Brake pads

re 2003 XK8. 81000 miles

I have a work order from prior owner front pads replaced at 50K. No info on rear pads
Front pads look good maybe 1/4" but not able to view rear pads clearly

Is there an indicator when rear pads should be replaced?

No indicator wear-bar chirping noise that I am aware of. Best thing to do is pull the rear wheels and take a good look through the viewing slots in the calipers.. A small flashlight helps....

I don’t let them get less than 5 mm. Which is about 0.2 inch

By the way, the ebc redstuff pads I use on multiple vehicles are a night and day improvement over the OEM pads. I recommend them to anyone wanting an upgrade in stopping power over their current set-up.

They will stop the car quicker than the OEM pads, leave very little brake dust, and are very easy on the rotors. Which was a surprise for me considering their increased friction coefficient.

Zray, is ebc redstuff the name of your brake pads. I would like to change the ones on mine as the keep the front wheels completely filthy.

ebc is the manufacturer. They are a British company. They make many different pad compounds. The “redstuff”
compound is the one I prefer for my driving needs. Which are “spirited, but far from racing”.

Amazon has them, as well as vendors like Summitt.

the front pads for my 2002 XKR are this ebc part number:

Front: EBC Brakes DP3689/2C Redstuff Ceramic Low Dust Brake Pad

Rears: EBC Brakes DP31198C Redstuff Ceramic Low Dust Brake Pad

i have the standard ATE brakes, not the Brembo’s.

My car has the OE Brembo system and I had the Redstuff. I was initially happy with them but on more spirited driving down canyon roads, they were not enough. I encountered lots of brake fade. Once the pad had worn, I replaced the Reds with EBC's BlueStuff pad. They were a little harder to break in than the RedStuff, but they have a stronger initial bite and they brake harder overall. These can also withstand abuse much better, having a broader operating temperature than the RedStuff. They are meant for occasional track days and sporty street use, given their higher friction coefficient over the Reds. They DO dust up more than the Reds and they do make more noise, especially during the break-in period. These give me much more confidence when stopping, so the initial noise and the dusting is a worthy compromise in my book. I also went ahead and flushed my brake fluid and filled it with ATE type 200 DOT 4 racing brake fluid.

This new setup pretty much made me forget wanting to add an electronic vacuum pump to the system.

I think you found out the beauty of the ebc lineup. They seem to have a pad for every type of driving.

Have you had the new pads on long enough to know how hard they are on the rotors ?

I've had them for about 8 months. I still haven't noticed the wear on the rotors.

I’m on my 2nd set of ebc redstuff pads in front. The rotors were put on with the first set, and still measure the same as new. And no grooving or hot spots either. I was sure I’d wear out the rotors as the same rate as the pads. Nicely surprised with the longevity of both pads and rotors.

my first set of pads lasted 58,000 miles. I change them when the material thickness is down to about 5 or 6 mm.
