Burnt out Piston

I have just heard back from my garage that one cylinder on my XKR has been over fuelling and has burnt out? Most probably because of an injector fault as apparently the signs of most heat are opposite the injector but I guess that would be normal?!
Has anybody got any experience of this before? It is going to cost about £2500 to fix.
Thing is my car was fully serviced only 1500 miles ago and nothing was pointed out to me at that time. It also had a new recondition engine about 10,000 miles ago!! All done by the same garage! It has been using what I consider to be a lot of oil since the new engine was fitted (about 1Ltr of oil every 1500 miles or so).
Seems to me that either the piston burnt out very very quickly or this has been a progressive thing over some time. The garage will not accept any liability at all.
There were some noises coming from the engine bay but the garage said this was the supercharger, they also changed a Lamda sensor? Also the restricted performance light came on and I drove about 5 miles home at 40mph before calling the garage.
Anyone have any ideas what would cause this sort of problem to develop?
Cheers
