Default A/C Problems

I recently purchased my 2000 XK8 from an individual that drove it only 1700 miles in the last 4 years. I had it checked over by a local Jaguar Dealership before purchasing. The report indicated that the Air Conditioner needed charging. When I drove it away the A/C worked but not as efficiently as you would like it. I had a mechanic friend of mine charge it. Initially it was fine and a day later it returned to an inefficient mode. He checked for leaks and found none. He then charged it again and it worked fine for nearly a week. Now it is not producing ANY cool air. Would this indicate that the A/C has died, or is there another alternative? I appreciate any suggestions regarding this issue.

There's a wealth of information in the FAQ's. A forum search would have brought you to this thread for A/C faults:

Components deteriorate with time as well as use. At only 1700 miles in four years, a vehicle really needs a systematic recommissioning rather than a check over.

When your friend did the recharges did he do a full vacuum down and charge, complete with PAG (Poly alkylene glycol) oil?

You need the correct quantity of oil in the system to lubricate the compressor and seals, otherwise the refrigerant could leak out.

The operation of the A/C system is dependent on good Freon pressure if the pressure becomes low it will disable the compressor. If what you are saying is correct once the system was recharged it was normal then it was low and it had and still has a leak. However, if a leak is not the issue (good pressure) then check the pressure switch it seems that a few failed rendering the A/C to be inoperative.

As Graham says in post #2 there's no end of stuff on a/c
Worth getting the diagnostic codes - this is the pdf of instructions which is part of Graham's link.

If you get a code 23 this might help
