A Call To The Jag Dealer Revealed....
I just called the closest Jag dealer to find out what warranty work had been done on my '97. The service guy was very helpful and looked up the dealer records. He told me the car was originally purchased at a dealer in RI. At 57k miles while still just under warranty the right side tensioners croaked and it took out 2 valves. This was in Feb 2002. They replaced both right side tensioners, chains and guides etc. But for some reason they didn't replace the LEFT side stuff while they had it apart. They also replaced the front rotors, calipers, pads, water pump, thermostat and power steering pump in this time frame. There were lots of earlier repairs done but it was all piddly stuff like window switches etc. As it has 40k more miles on it now its possible someone else out of warranty may have replaced the other side BUT I will still pull off the left cover and see whats there. I am still shaking my head as to why they didn't do both sides when they had it apart.
I guess the warranty timer on this car must have been defective for all this stuff to crap out just BEFORE the warranty ran out. Usually that stuff happens right after the warranty expires.
Update - I just called the dealer the car was purchased new at and they were much less helpful. I wanted to see if they did any other work on the car after the warranty ran out as the car stayed in that area until I bought it and they said they purge all non-warranty repair records after 3 years of working on the car last.

This service guy was very nice about it and even looked up the tensioner part numbers on the repair order to see if they were the latest ones but likely they are the 2nd gen ones he said. So may have to replace them again anyways.
Found out the car was purchased in Nov '96 and fairly early as the last 6 digits are 004643.

Dave, the one in Charlotte wouldn't even talk to me, said it was privacy matter. Yeah, and I looked at him with a look that he knew what I thought of his a...
I found the owner's name in the hand book and took a chance, he was very pleasant and told me of a few things he had done, transmission being one. He said he had all the records with the car, so I called the dealer, once again the privacy deal.
In today's world, I get it, just don't like it.
Hope you find some good news when you open it up.

Dave,
The Jaguar dealership in Greensboro (Flow Jaguar) is the friendliest, most helpful, and most negotiable Jaguar dealership I've ever encountered. They also have two of the most experienced Jaguar master techs on the East Coast....
Our local dealership in Cary is about 25 miles from me. Flow Jaguar in Greensboro is about 75 miles from me. But the longer drive is always well worth the trip. That may be true for you in Danville as well....

Dave, OR, just drive it another 40 miles and we will set under the shade tree I left on purpose and do the tensioners here. If you are going to do it the tie way, we are good to go. I could have a buddy make the lock down bar, but I think you need a crank lock also, been a while since I did any reading on this.
Haven't done this yet and would look forward to it.

I was thinking of using the wire tie method. My main concern is that I live alone and this is my only car since a teen with no license ran a light and totally my Alfa. Knowing my luck I'll have it all apart and then reach a point where I need something I don't have and have no way to go get it.
