Can auto headlight sensor be repaired?
In auto-on position my headlights work intermittently. I found that knocking on the rear-view mirror causes them to go on and off. So I'm wondering if the sensor in the mirror is loose. Has anyone ever worked on the sensor. Is it possible to access it without destroying the mirror? Several times my lights have shut off and I didn't notice it right away because of the street lights. So I'm operating them manually – a minor inconvenience for sure, but one I'd like to eliminate. Thanks!

Well they can certainly be opened, but I was unable to fix the problem I had related to daylight detection. Have a look here;

Thanks for the reply. My 2005 mirror looks different than the one in your thread. Its buttons are labeled comp and mirror. But if I get brave I may open it to look for a loose joint. I'm a bit afraid of letting the magic fluid run out. Is it pretty well contained?

I've opened the mirror on my 03 with no issues. First take the cover off the wiring behind the mirror and check for loose connections. You may also need to remove the console panel where the dome lights are and check for connections. If you can knock on it and it works my bet is a loose connection.
I know what you mean about getting use to the auto functions, I depend on them and am very spoiled as mine all work great!
