Car Shut Down And Won't Restart
#21
Right, after a bit of time away with house move stuff I'm finally back onto the XK8.
Today I jacked up the rear of the car and got to the fuel line coming from the tank into the fuel filter, undid the nut and pulled the line out (as far as would go, not completely removed at this point). Some fuel did spill out as expected.
I then albeit with the car still jacked up on one side, put 12V direct to the pump and once again it ran but sounded unloaded and no fuel came out of the cracked off hose. I would have expected fuel to have sprayed out if the pump was delivering.
Can anyone think of anything I may have missed before I go down the route of £1000 garage bill for a tank out job? Is it worth removing the fuel level sender to have a look at what is going on inside the tank (comes with obvious risk of fuel level uncertainty though)?
Thanks
Paul

Hi cjd777, (I'm very envious of your car collection, my uncle has a Triumph Roadster and I used to run Spitfires before deciding that Jaguars would be my money sponges)
I assume you mean run a tube down the filler neck into the tank. I have put fuel into the car so I know its not empty and it certainly didn't stop like it had run out of fuel but for the sake of a length of hose its worth a double check.
I have now, through someone I used to work with about 20 years ago sourced a vehicle ramp on which to work on the car so the whole tank out thing is less daunting than it once was.

Thanks for the comments on my cars.
If you have it up on ramps then you need to drain the tank as much as possible as that would shove all the fuel in the tank towards the front pick up.
What will be a surprise if the location of the lines, if you have not already found them, above and to the left of the rear end, over the heat shield. and that's where your hand will need to go. I went feet out towards the back of the car and left hand putting the tool on the line and using a long screwdriver to to push it into the release valve.
Much younger then mid seventies. Can't be any worse than putting a windshield in a MGB, did that today in 90 degree heat. Well, I did have a umbellar for shade. LOL

No that's on the Spitfire and GT6's, yes, impossible would be the right word. Left if off the Spit6 as the car is Charcoal with black wires and didn't have any chrome other than the bumpers.
If you aren't doing anything the rest of the day, see if you can make it over here and help with the canvas top today. LOL Wish is were that easy.
Hope you get the Jaguar sorted soon.
