Question Carpet removal XK8 to enable footwell welding RESOLVED

Hi, I have to weld some new plates into the Floor pan of my XK8 I will obviously need to remove the Carpets?.. Does anyone know the Secret of how to remove them without destroying anything important like the aluminum sill scuff panels? Thanks John

The fixings for the Door Sill Treadplate (item 1) are concealed under the 'Jaguar - XK8' Insert (item 2):

The insert is glued in position. To remove it, warm gently to soften the adhesive and carefully start to prise up one end with a wooden spatula or thin plastic blade.

Once the end is lifted, insert a length of nylon fishing line and free the remainder of the adhesive using a sawing action on the line.

Take great care because it's very easy to distort the Insert.

Once the Insert is removed, release the three Paint Clearing Screws beneath to free the Treadplate.

A hot air electric paint removal gun is the best tool for the job as GGG described above. Also if the nylon fishing line is too fragile, try using copper wire, about 22 or 24 gauge.

Seats and centre console out as well, when you lift the seats out pay extra attention to how you are doing it, very easy to catch the door and rear b post trim panel...

Also if you are interested I know a guy who is now making repair sections for the footwells to OE look with all the ribs but of course without the plate that caused all the probs in the first place!

Hey XKRRacer,
I'd be interested in the details of your contact who can supply the floor plates - my recently-acquired XK8 needs the usual footwell repairs!

Hi again, Any tips on removing the centre console to remove the carpets?

The Hot air gun and copper wire worked beautifully for the Sill Guard Thank you.

Just when you thought you were finished with wacky tools like a hot air gun and wire, now you need a couple of credit cards to remove the shifter surround!

How much credit needs to be on the cards to make this work properly?

Enough to buy one of these when you break the tabs

Mina Gallery: Aluminum Shift Gate for XK8 or XKR

+1

It only took Jaguar three XJ saloon models and the XK8 4.0 litre to solve the rubbish plastic shifter surround design.

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone that can do the welding as well?

This job is on my cars to do list as well, and after my problems with mechanical bits, i wouldn't fancy having to use a welding gun.

They'd have to evacuate the area before letting me near it.

I'm also wondering how a guy named Lance with identical email addresses, moved from Kings Lynn to Cornwall so fast

He must have an XKR.
