Catalytic converter not registering?
Trying to get a smog test done on my 97 XK8. Only 140 miles since last check 2 years ago, plus a couple of battery drains. I got the oil changed and drove it about 250 miles. Today the tech tells me the catalytic converters never "registered" or showed as active. WTH??? I've never had any issues with smog tests. He said to drive it more, and expect a DTC that would identify the problem. Other than the recurring "stability system fail" light coming on and my door locks going crazy, there have been no other issues. Anyone have a clue what is going on?

Typically, if the battery is disconnected, the entire cycle of emissions tests has to be re-done from scratch. This involves a number of individual tests that ALL have to pass before you get the overall OK for emissions. Each test runs independently and has its own criteria. When those criteria are met, the test passes. There is a right answer to this, as documented by Jaguar. The other option is to "drive around", but making sure you vary your test. Do some accelerations, some cruising at highway speed, etc.
A better answer is to spend a few dollars on an ELM327 (eBay, Amazon) and the corresponding phone app. These cheap tools can show you these tests, and their pass/fail status.
On a car driven this rarely, you might want to check into a trickle charge for maintaining your battery. If the battery is maintained, the OBD status remains active and the tests no longer have to be re-run.
Best of luck, keep us posted.

I am having the same problem. Had to replace a O2 sensor as it produced a hard code. Drove it about 50 miles to re-set everything and coming up with a red X on the CAT. Everything else is in the green. I have to pass a smog test also. Took it to Pep Boys and asked it it would pass and they said NO. Told me they had a Jag in a couple of months ago and it took 700 miles of driving before it re-set. Drove both freeway and city. Guess I might have to take it on a long trip.
