Default Central Locking Problem

Hi

Just got my dream car - 1998 XKR

Bought with a known central locking problem that I am keen to fix. Would appreciate any help that can be offered!

Symptoms are:
When doors are locked, they lock/unlock/lock/unlock about 3 times, then the alarm goes off. Fob doesn't seem to stop it, key in ignition does.

Hints:
When I bought the car, I was told the "central locking relay in the boot" needs replacing. Looking through the electrical diagrams on JTIS, I see two possible candidates if this actually the problem - a "Door Locking Relay" which I believe to be in the RH fascia, and a "Security and Locking Control Module" which is in the boot. Reading on these forums the former seems easiest to replace, but the latter is more likely to be the cause. Faults in my thinking?

Interested to know if you resolved this problem. My 2001 XK8 convertible does the same lock/unlock cycle but only occasionally. It seems to cause the alarm to trigger when I subsequently try to lock the car with the key fob. Don't know what the problem is but I am suspecting a bad contact somewhere in the wiring harness or relay/fuse box.

Another perhaps related symptom is occasional failure of the passenger window mechanism. Seems to resolve itself - temporarily - by opening and closing the door.

Most likely cause will be a sticky door ajar switch causing the lock/unlock symptom. Check the message centre on the dash when locking the car to see if the door ajar message comes up.

The relays will be the quickest thing to rule out though.

Hope this helps,

Default happened to me once too

This exact thing happened to me after I spent several hours trying to install a new passenger window. (it was successful thanks to those on this site) Anyway I realized that all that activity drained the battery. After a charge it went away. I realize that his advice (charge the battery) has been posted so many times that this post seems redundant, but that's what worked for me. Hope it helps. John
