chassis plate?

Chassis number is part of the VIN, which you can see through the bottom edge of the windscreen. Search this forum as there are some good guides on what to look for.

No disrespect, but a quick search would pull up zillions of threads on all the problems that can affect XK8's and XKRs.
Assuming your are in the UK, get the registration number and start here :
https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
If there's a history of rust problems, or other stuff which hasn't been fixed - walk away. Otherwise, get the book by Nigel Thorley, spend a few hours browsing this and www.jaguarforum.com (which is slightly more UK based) and you will have enough knowledge to know what the major problems are likely to be.
Chassis number = vin = on the windscreen UK passenger side but that won't tell you much. Service history and receipts for work done is worth a great deal more.
