Question CHECK ENGINE warning light & managing faults?

So, this night my CHECK ENGINE light came on (05XK8 w/150k miles). Car still runs great but just to be sure I took it to my local Jag shop this a.m. I've been doing business there for years. They told me codes indicated leaking fuel injectors, a failing cooling fan and give me an estimate of $3.5-4K. I Couldn't leave the car so I guess they reset the codes and away I went … with the car still running great BUT without the CHECK ENGINE light. Anyway, several hours later the engine warning light is still off in the car is still running great.

So, what say you all. Should I keep my fingers crossed and keep driving or get the car in tomorrow, bite the bullet and authorize the recommended repair$?

Putting it another way could I have been looking at a false positive? A CHECK ENGINE light and some kind of vanishing faults?

Inquiring minds truly do want to know.

Live long and prosper & thanks

Mark,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X100 forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

You have done exactly the right thing FIRST which is to have the codes read. You also did exactly the right thing SECOND which was not to tell the dealer to go ahead with repairs.

What you really wanted was the actual CODES and not just descriptions but the dealer has at least given you an indications of possible causes. As the CEL is now OFF, the dealer must have cleared codes. Some fault codes return immediately and others after a number of "trips" which is effectively an engine start-drive-stop cycle. You may be lucky and find they were just caused by out-of-range signals and don't come back or maybe some of them will come back. This is why you really needed to know the actual codes.

A major cause of fault codes and/or error messages appearing on a vehivle which is otherwise running normally is an undercharged or failing battery. Check and eliminate this first before considering the estimated $3.5-4K expenditure.

Graham

Graham is spot on.

As well as checking the battery, the other simple thing I would do is fill up the car with best quality high-octane fuel, if you have it in the USA, and add a full dose of good quality injector cleaner to the full tank and then take the car for a good fast run. If it was a slightly dodgy injector then this might well clear it.

Buy a cheap OBD tool (elm327 etc) so you can read the codes at any time - and post what they are (P0123 etc) in case your tool is not great at giving the correct meaning.

Also means you can search the code(s) on here.

Definitely worth a second opinion from another shop for spending that type of coin, especially if CEL remains off.
x2 for what RichardS mentioned. ^^^
If what they said was a "failing cooling fan", I would like to know how this was diagnosed. Sounds a bit flavorful of a description leading to an open book on repairs
Cheers
