Check Engine Warning on...then off

Check Engine Warning on...then off
We were out yesterday in our 2001 XK8 and parked the car to have lunch. Upon returning to the car,
I started it up and the Check Engine Icon lit up and did not go out again like it normally does. The gauges
were all in the normal range and the engine sounded fine. We drove home (about an hour) and parked the car.
This morning I went out and started it and the Check Engine Light was still on. I took the car out for a few minutes and the light
went out and has stayed out. Again, the engine sounded and ran perfectly while the light was on. Anybody hazard
a guess as to what the issue is/was?

RE: Check Engine Warning on...then off
Sorry, no crystal ***** here.
Try:
Advance Auto Parts
353 E. Prima Vista Blvd.
Port Saint Lucie, FL. 34983
(772) 878-3665
In some areas, this service is no longer offered to customers at no charge. The generic scanner that they use will not read codes for all systems on your car, but you are likely to leave with an engine or transmissionfault code to research. Ignore code P1000 or P1111, those are not indicative of a fault.

engine light
It came on suddenly. I went to the non-Jag dealer -not nunder warranty. He had a little hand-held reader, said it was an "evap" code, cranked the gas cap tighter; he then cancelled out the code, and presto! no light; I drove home a few miles and still no light. I had filled it the day bedore. Just a clue that might help someone. No telling what a repair shop might have bitten me for.

Well, to add to the engine light/evap code saga, the damned light came n again and stayed. And it was accompanied with the "limp home" message a couple of times, and one time it actually ran with low power. It rained mostly for a couple of weeks - maybe a factor? But two days aho - no light! Ran like, well, a striped-assed cat! I was all set to invest in a gas cap and it must have felt a disturbance in the force...
