Yes and rebalance.

Todays engines REALLY do not like vibration.
Call a junk yard or check ebay, but I would not leave it like it is. Like Fram used to say, you can pay a little now or a lot later.

97v8's to 2003 should all be the same. normally aspirated and supercharged are not though. youll need to send yours as a core, butif its cracked you may have to pay the core charge as its not rebuildable

They are talking about the main front pulley, between the pulley and centre where it slides onto the crankshaft there is a rubber section, this can break up in time and is what is called the harmonic balancer, what it does is minimise vibration from the crank

I am trying to get the harmonic balancer off my 4.0 L V-8 2002 S-Type. Does the big nut, 24MM turn left to loosen like a normal bolt or is it reverse threaded? It doesn't seem to want to budge!

Thanks,

Richard Lindsey

Yep it is a normal threaded bolt but done up very tight 350nm, you will need to hold the crank still whilst you are trying to undo it

I'm going to assume that the balancer that you posted a picture of is indeed the one you are referring to. Replace it now!! The elastomeric rubber is cracked and dry rotted. I don't know how much pressure was exerted to the outter ring of the balance, that didn't help the rubber a bit. Then there is the matter of the chipped casting.

The weight of the balancer is important for complete dynamic balancing of the internal rotating components as well as canceling destructive harmonic resonances. These frequencies are read in IPS (inches per second) and are measurable with accelerometers placed on certain portions of the engine at certain RPM. The upper band of resonance can destroy crackshafts, bearings, cams etc.

I saw a suggestion to replace it with a remanned this is a good option both mechanically and financially!

I don't know if these engines are externally balanced, if they are I would take the remanned balancer along with the old and the chipped to a reputable Automotive Machine shop that does balancing and ask them to compare the new to the old.

Wikipedia over view of a Harmonic Balancer Click here.

Just my 2 cents.
