Default Cigarette Lighter Swap

The lid hinges on my ashtray are broken, so I got a used one from CW, but it came with no lighter haha. I would like to swap the lighters, but I can't figure out how to remove the lighter from my old tray. The green plastic mount has me particulary vexxed.

Here is the underneath. The green mount is not broken, it's supposed to be shaped that way...

A view from the other side. The mount can be seen between the lighter socket and a connector mount...

Top view showing the mount around the lighter socket...

The new, empty tray...

The socket is in there really tight, and I don't know the procedure to release it without breaking it. Anyone know how?

Thanks!

Skid;

This is your chance to quit.

The lighter was delete engineered by the Surgeon General.

Why don't you give the good folks at Coventry West a call and ask how they got the power outlet out?

The thought occurred to me, and I probably would have asked them how (and WHY?), but I dropped it off at a Jag dealer this morning and they got it out and switched to the other tray. Never got to see how it was done though.

Skid;

Glad to hear it.

I thought you might be setting me up but still went for it.

Previous owner claims he never smoked in my car but I am sure I can smell residue in it.

So did the dealer locate the sound from your nether regions or not?

cheers,

jj

Took it to two shops so far this week, and they both think it's a loose slip joint. Have known this for a while, but the warranty company says they need to see some kind of damage to replace it. Keep telling them it's not a good idea to keep running something that wobbles and buzzes just because it's not visibly damaged. Should hear something soon, meanwhile I drive it as little as possible.

I have heard of a 'slipped disc' but not a slipped joint?

Is this the shock absorber attachment point?

You guys worry me on this forum cause you are always coming up with something else I have never heard of that goes wrong with XK's.....hard to relax and enjoy the ride when you are wondering if that little noise is the beginning of the end of something expensive.

Oh what the heck.....floor it!!!

cheers,

jj

That disk you're describing would be the flex joint or "guido" a large rubber bushing on the driveshaft flange that absorbs shocks and vibrations. Guidos are also used in steering columns and other components that encounter shocks and vibrations.

The slip joint allows the shaft to lengthen or shorten slightly to allow for hills or accelleration/decelleration when the body frame is doing the same thing.

Default Sor the next guy to refer to...

The lighter socket is easily removed by tapping it out. Just tap lightly on the threaded part on the underside.. When reinstalling, make sure to align the grove with that of the socket. I removed mine and removed the nut. All parts came apart which allowed me to clean it with a small steel brus on the end of a rotary tool. It now looks like new!
