Default The Clamp from hell

Just when I thought is was gonna get easy. I ran into this metal "pinch together" clamp on the partial load breather that I need to replace.

Does any body know of a trick to open this. I realize this is a one time destroy it clamp but it is made out ot very tough steel. PITA

Here is the little darling.

Use regular pliers to squeeze, then a thin screwdriver slipped in to release. It is reusable, just mess with it and you will figure it out.

These clamps are QUICK release type. They are also reusable. Follow the link below and go to Post #6 nice color details on how they open and close.

They are used for two reasons:

1. speed of assembly
2. cannot be overtightened and crush plastic coolant outlet pipes

Stick a flathead screwdriver between the moving part and the stationary part of the clasp and twist the screwdriver, it will open.

Understood. I am not worried about speed and I have not overtightened anything in 4 decades

They are Oetiker clamps (https://www.oetiker.com/en/About-Us/...ogies/PexGrip/) and are designed for even sealing around a hose connection, especially with plastic pipes.

It's not a good idea to use jubilee clips or worm-type clamps when connecting a hose to a plastic pipe as they don't allow for dimensional changes due to heat and will eventually cause the plastic pipe connection to fail.

Another reason not to use a Jubilee clip/worm-gear clamp in place of an Oetiker or spring-type constant-tension clamp on any plastic pipe or fitting is that during thermal cycles the flat spot under the screw allows that section of pipe to expand and deform to a greater degree than the rest of the circumference, which promotes cracking/failure at that point of the pipe or fitting.
