Clicking noise when ignition switch is on
I have a 2000 XK8 with less than 80k on it, and I am experiencing a clicking noise when I turn on the ignition switch. When I start the engine, sometimes it races. I will turn it off and then it acts normal. The clicking noise does not occur everytime, just occassionally. New to Jags so any guideance would be appreciated.
Any guesses?

Welcome to the forum Brad2000XK8,
Guess - . They guys here don't guess, they diagnose.
You should add where this clicking is coming from - behind the dash / front of the engine / back of the engine etc.
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see.
In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

It is a 2000 XK8. The noise sounds like it is coming from the throttle body. I have an OBDII reader, but there are no codes nor are there codes pending. Concerned that I may have to replace the throttle body. The car does crank, it is not a connection problem. When it starts, the engine races to 2500RPM+ then slowly comes down, if I push the accelerator, the RPMs go up again a little then comes down. I then runs rough, followed by smoothing out and then acts normal. I thought it was the throttle position sensor initially, but that was when I was told by my wife that it raced then smoothed out. The sensor is not sold separately, it's part of the throttle assembly on this model. I am hoping I get some advice on this one. Please help.

If you have not already, try cleaning all the throttle body connectors with electronic contact cleaner (like Radio Shack sells).
If you do need a new throttle body, a rebuilt unit from Automotive Scientific Inc. Your #1 Source for ECU, TCU, ABS, EBCM, Climate Control and Speedometer Repairs may be the most cost effective approach.
Before you implicate the throttle body though, I suggest you remove the ECU (with the battery disconnected) and inspect the circuit board for wet or black residue from leaking electrolytic capacitors. If you find this, your ECU needs to be repaired.

The reason I asked to turn the A/C Heater off is that at times the 2 solenoid related to the heating system will chatter. They are mounted against the rear firewall just to the right of the TB when looking in from the front of the car. This noise could be your problem and not related to the TB. Check it before you begin pulling the TB. I also recommend ASI for a rebuild of the TB if necessary.

LondonXK8Boy, I can't get the video in the US for some reason. I removed the air filter, the Mass Air Flow Sensor, the houseing to the throttle body and cleaned thoroughly - including connections. I also used throttle body cleaner and a lint free rag and cleaned the throttle body thoroughly inside. There was an incredible amount of build-up. I purchased the car from an individual with all the maintenance records and I feel their mechanic was not doing all the work he had stated. The air filter was dirty. My guess it has beenon for the last 30,000 miles. I vacuumed the filter and put it back on, because the auto parts store won't have a new one until tomorrow. After I put everything back on, the car ran very smooth. I hope this corrected the problem. I haven't drove it much since last week because I realized the upper radiator hose is swollen. I have the bottom and top hoses ordered. I will replace this weekend. I'd like to get the cat back on the road.
