code 1643

code 1643
I have a 97 xk8 convertible I just bought. Code showing is 1000 and 1643. I have an abs light on and showing stability control failure.
I cleaned all four wheel sensors and found one broken ground wire. I fixed it and also cleaned the braided ground cable under the car. I cleaned the battery terminals and charged the battery. Cleared the codes.
Drove it for about 20 minutes with no lights showing, no codes showing and all seemed well. Then I stopped, put it in reverse and the abs light came back on and the stability control failure reappeared. I cannot clear the codes. Other than codes showing seems to drive fine. Dash gauge shows voltage to be 13 volts but not sure of the accuracy. Any ideas? I am poor and lost. Should have thought about the poor part before I bought a Jaguar.

I've moved your post from General Tech Help section to XK8/XKR section. Members here with the same model will have plenty of advice for you on ABS.
The P1000 is not a fault code. It indicates Onboard Monitoring Tests have not been completed since last memory clear. You will always see this or P1111 - OnBoard Monitoring Tests complete.

Reason I ask is that there are a few things that can go wrong that will often show up when a big steering input is made.
The sections of wiring connecting to the front sensors ... these have to flex as steering is turned left or right. If there is ...
- a broken wire
- a marginal contact in a connector
- a wiring section strapped down in such a way as to stress it when a steering input happens ...
then you may get an ABS / TRAC warning at that time. (The warning will stay there at least until the next time you start the car.)
First thing I would try is to clean and re-seat the connectors. This can be done without removing road wheels if I remember right. Then maybe inspect the way the wiring is strapped down and re-do this if it gets stressed near steering lock, building in some slack.
If no joy, we can move on to some electrical tests that look for intermittent connectivity.
Good luck.
