Default Which code reader would you recomend?

Ive noticed a lot of you wonderful Jaguar XK8 members carry a code reader with you at all times, what a great idea.Ive looked into getting one, prices start from about $55 up to,well I guess over $1000.
Which one would you recommend?and once we all have one,how do we know what codes mean what?Is there a manual for all codes for Jag's?hope my question is not a stupid one. Thanks Shaun

Shaun
I bought the Autoenginuity with the Jag module It also will tell you if added performance options actually work It's kind of pricey around $450.00 but it will tell you most of your faults. body, brakes etc...

Hey Sam, he's got the auto enginuity setup. Its like $225 for the reader and an additional $225 for the unlock code to read all the extra Jag stuff. ABS, TRANS, ETC.

Great software package, he was kind enough to loan it to me.

I have been using the Actron 9175 series with great success in all my cars. but you really need the the JTIS to get more info on the JAG DTC codes than the basic definitions of the code reader itself...

Calibrit, it all depends on what you want to monitor and/or 'see' on the car. If its just the basic engine and transmission codes, pick a reader valued at $40-$75 on our member approved page. If you want all the bells and whistles, the big jump to the AE hardware/software combination will give you years of valuable service and diagnostic options. As long as I don't get a car newer than a 2008, this AE software will work. If I want to get the newer version, compatible with the newer jags, its only $100 for the updated software.

Many options to choose from out there.

I've got the Actron CP9185 for my 2002 XKR. I'm sure other (less expensive) ones work fine, but the CP9185 was recommended in the link (above) so I bought it. I know that it doesn't read all of the Jaguar tests though...but I didn't know that I could buy something to make it read them all. Interesting...
