Default Cold Transmission Noise

I am a new owner of a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 L. Love the car, and it runs and handles great. However, there is one thing I notice about it. When the car is cold, and I start out driving it it makes a noise between shifts. The noise does not seem to effect the shifts. There is no slippage, or hardness of the shifting, however it makes sortof a whining sounds just before it shifts. Once the car gets warm and has been driven a few miles, it goes away and shifts perfectly. The car now has about 92K miles on it. Would a transmission service help? What should I do? Thanks for your input.

sound like you may be low on fluid... pump little noisy then when heats up fluid expands then noise goes away...

i was saying for "preacher" but for you ... you need a trani overhaul. usual trani failure for a jag ZF 5HP, it is sealed for life but nothing last forever... i wud change the fluid on everything on a jag.. cheap insurance.

How can I check the fluid level. I also do not notice any leakages at all. I cannot see a dipstick. I understand from reading some posts that it is sealed, but has a fill plug. Would it be a good idea to just drain the fluid, and change the filter kit.....and can I do this on my own, or should I get a mechanic to do so. Anyone know how hard it can be to do this. Also, if the tranny is failing, will I get a message on the dash in anyway? Just curious.

Hey Preacher most likely is low fluid
Iwould take it to dealer and have them check fluid level
And if it is low at least you know they"ll put the correct fluid in it
Just my 2 cents

biggest thing is checking it at correct TOT or "transmission oil temperature"
its no big deal from there
start car run it in rev then drive for 10 seconds each
then back into park and raise the car
when fluid reaches temp
30 celsius remove fill plug from r/h side of trans
if no fluid comes out of fill plug
add CORRECT fluid till it starts to come out
wait for fluid stream to trickle from plug and then reinstall plug
make sure you do the final part before TOT reaches 50 celsious
any questions?
