Here's what I think:
Headgasket set 260, 8 pistons 1920, main bearings 90, oil pump 400, sleeve 8 cylinders 1100 + sleeves, degrease block 60, deck block 250, block freeze plugs, 120, degrease heads 50, pressure test heads, 50, 3 angle valve grind 75, resurface heads 80, grind crank 85, polish crank 45. This adds up to $4585. This does not include assembly and checking cams and such. If you are getting these promised items for $2295, move fast before they go out of business! A rebuild by Coventry West or Motorcars Limited is the way to go. You will get what you pay for and these two companies are tried and true.

Oldmots,

Where does one buy the pistons, rods, bearings, sleeves, etc? Are these Jaguar parts or aftermarket?

Actually, a lot of these parts are hard to come by. I have no source for the crank, rod bearings, oil pump, valves and keepers, and a few other key parts. The pistons are available form Gaudin Jaguar but I don't know what sizes they can get. The main bearings are graded and I also don't know if oversized are available for a ground crank, the crank is not available either. Folks like Coventry West and Motorcars Ltd have wholesale sources and may be able to get these parts. They do rebuild the engines so they must have sources. The real key is resleeving....this is an intensive machine operation that is not done well everywhere. Results are hit and miss. Go only to places with vast experience. Jag has been resleeving the 4.0 Nikail blocks successfully but others have not done so well.

By the way, if I had a choice, and cost is no object on this...I would always use OEM Jaguar parts for a rebuild. Way too difficult to do over. A few hundred dollars saved on parts can translate to thousands lost in the aftermath.

I have an example from last weekend. I had an overheat episode and figured it was either the thermostat or the fan module. I pulled the fan unit (ugh!),checked the module and harnesses, it tested okay, so I replaced the thermostat. I got it from the dealer as I never, ever buy an aftermarket thermostat. This thing cost $70. Thats a lot for a thermostat. I was in Advance auto for my weekly visit and asked to look at the same thermostat. It had no jiggler valve, had the wrong gasket and looked puny in comparison to the OEM part which was a Waxstat made in England. It would not have worked.
