Convertible or Coupe?

I agree with Kevin D. As drop dead gorgeous the XKE convertible was, the XKE coupes were hideous. Now the XK8 coupes are perfect and the XK8 convertibles are so so.
I think that the coupe is a more masculine car. The convertibles seem to be preferred with women. It's interesting that in the US mostly the convertibles were sold. Go to England and you will have a hard time finding a convertible, coupes are everywhere.

They are so fast either way, though, that unless you're a motorhead (like me) the weight and subtle differences don't matter.
Assuming your a guy, if you want women to oogle, get the convertible. If you want to declare your malehood, get the coupe.
So it comes down to which one do you want? There's no logic in the question at all.

I think the coupe is sleeker and more exotic looking, the convertible more fun in nice weather. I live in an area that is not so great for convertibles, I prefer sunroofs. My XKR is a black coupe which has 20" BBS Detroit wheels, Red Brembos with drilled disks and shading film on the windows. It looks so aggressive with the quad tailpipe extensions that Smart cars break down just getting near it! Being an old guy, this makes me feel good.

I bought my wife a 2000 XKR Convertible (Black/Black) in December 09 so have only had it a couple of months but after having several wonderful top down winter days already here in Vancouver (just check out some of the Olympics weather to see what I mean) I wouldn't have it any other way.
We have our SUV's for the lousy weather anyway.
In fact I am also in the market for an Aston Martin Vantage and was looking for a coupe but am now thinking I might want that one in soft top too.
Either way they are both gorgeous and it is all personal preference.
Cheers,
Mark

I was looking towards a coupe for alot of the reasons mentioned above, but gotta convertable and love it. If you want a coupe, the odds are two to one against you, as of the over 90 thousand made between 1995 and 2005, 29,445 were coupes, and 60,655 convertibles. Just as now .. convertibles commanded a premium price when new. How about ... mabe one of each :-)

Convertible of Coupe
Its kinda like choosing between a fine Cabernet and a fine cognac...can't I have both?
Not really... so here goes;
As mine would be a DD, a Coupe is more practical...
Here in the States the Coupe is unique...
As I have only seen ladies (sorry gents) driving the 'verts, a 'vert was not for me...
The Coupe is more masculine...
The Coupe is better looking...
I have owned about 10 "verts in my younger days, and do not currently need the thrill of an open top (I have a 40' sailboat that gives me the great outdoors)...
Did I say the Coupe is great?

I will (marginally) agree that the coupe is better looking and when I started my shopping around I was sort of leaning towards the coupe. But since (1) the coupes are not that easy to find (2) I am in sunny SoCal and, most importantly (3) I have NEVER owned a convertible, I figured it was finally time for a convertible. No regrets!

Of course we all love our respective cars and this is purely opinion, but the coupe just does it for me. It took me five months of hard searching to find another XKR coupe after the untimely demise of my 2001 XKR.
The marginally better performance due to lighter weight and stiffer chassis are nice, but it was the unbeatable lines made the it worth it to keep turning over rocks to find another supercharged coupe. The car looks stunning from all angles. I also feel that the coupe looks more substantial and exotic.
I could have bought (and nearly did) a number of XKR 'verts before I found my current car. I'm glad I waited.

I had a 2000 XK8 convert. in BRG for 9 years and kept drooling over Paul Pavliks BRG coupe for a year or so and finally sold the convert. and started a search for a BRG coupe. It took me a year and a half but I finally found one, a 2006 XKR. Persistents pays off. In that time I only found 4 other BRG coupes, all to high in milage, like 105000. or had been moded to death, or were in Wash. state. This car is a keeper.

Well, I'm going to come in here (again) on the side of the open cars. My first was a 1948 Buick Super (Baby Blue as we called it then!), and I've had something open ever since. This Jag is the dream of a lifetime to counter what i had all along, but "not quite what I really want"), and it still is a rush/smile to open it up to the wind and the sun, and the noise and the dust.
I've told my wife she can bury me in it and save the cost of a coffin! DaleD
