Convertible Top Rattle
02 XK8 Select Edition 28K miles when purchased 8/7/05
[hr]Hi:
Hope someone may have some thoughts on an issue I'm having with the convertible top on my vehicle. There is a rattle/squeak that comes from the passenger side convertible top area. If I drop the passenger window approximately an eight of an inch the rattle/squeak stops, but as soon as the passenger window is in the full up position the noise is back. It’s been like this since the day I bought the car and I've had it back to the selling dealership on 4 occasions and they still have not resolved the problem. Visit (1) they replaced the front, main, and rear hood frame seals. Visit (2) they replaced the rod and latch assembly, of note, after this the noise was louder than ever before. Visit (3) they said it was a loose header assembly and they adjusted assembly as required. Visit (4) they lubricated top and window seals as needed.
Because of the schedule I have at work, and the fact I live in Maryland and the selling dealer is in Vienna, VA, I find I always need to pick up my car after the dealership has closed for the day. This means I’m dropping off the loaner car and driving my car home when I find the noise is still there even though the service department says they have fixed it. I contacted the service advisor that I'm extremely frustrated with the quality of the work of the service department and he nearly begged me to give them another opportunity to resolve the rattle. He said it was very important that the service advisors get an "outstanding" rating when Jaguar contacts me to answer the service survey. I did tell him I would bring the car back in yet again for a 5th visit to address the same problem, but now I'm wondering if I'm being too agreeable in allowing them a 5 try and maybe I should just contact Jaguar and get them involved.
Of note, there have been other repair/service issues that they have needed up to 3 visits to finally identify and resolve. I don't have a good feeling regarding the skills/work ethics of the technicians employed at this dealership. Especially considering some of the repairs I've needed should have been identified at the "140 Point" Select Edition checklist they supposedly did to designate the car a select edition vehicle.

I fixed a convertible top rattle. Maybe this will help, maybe not. I pulled the liner our of the sides of the trunk. I found a couple thing laying in the right side and the CD changer was loose. It was not unbolted. It was just easy to move and make it did rattle. I cut a small piece of styrofoam that was a press fit and wedged it under the CD player. Its okay now.
