Default Coolant temp code p0116 p0117

I have a 99 XK8 and I have codes p0116 and p0117. When i hook up my scanner and look at live data it says that my coolant temperature is -31F. Because it was cheap i went ahead and replaced the sensor but no change. The connector is good and i cant find any breaks in the wiring. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? I dont know if it related or not but when the car gets hot is will start surging at idle and may stall. Im thinking this is because the car thinks it is extremely cold. Thanks in advance for any help.

Code P0117 is defined as a Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input.

The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor measures the rise and fall of the Engine Coolant Temperature. This provides critical data needed for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control the Air Fuel Ratio, the Ignition Spark Timing, the cooling fans, and many components of the Emissions Control Systems. The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor converts the coolant temperature into a voltage that is high when the engine is cold and low as the engine warms up.

Common Problems That Trigger the P0117 Code

Defective Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
Rusty and/or corroded Engine Coolant
Faulty or corroded Engine Coolant Temperature wiring or connections....
I'll send you the P0116 as well. Did you try a reset via the reader?

P0116 :
There may be no noticeable symptoms if the problem is very intermittent, however the following may occur:
MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
Poor drivability
Black smoke at tailpipe
Poor fuel economy
May not idle
May exhibit stalling or misfires....

Potential causes of the P0116 code include:
Missing or stuck-open thermostat
Bad ECT sensor
Short or open on signal wire
Short or open on ground wire
Poor connections in wiring....

Hope I helped you somehow...

The best of luck!!!

Keep us informed about the outcome.

Here's the relevant extract from the Jaguar DTC table for P0116 and P0117:

Although ECT sensor failure is one of the possible causes, problems in the sensing circuit are also on the list.

Here's the test procedure from JTIS for P0116 and P0117 codes:

thanks for the reply. I have replaced the cts and the thermostat. I'll check the harness for resistance next and see if i can find any problems with that. I dont see any obvious problems with the harness so its time to go digging I guess.
