Cost to replace wheel bearings
In another post I questioned a roaring noise which, thanks to Gus, I now believe is the rear driver's side wheel bearing (although I am surprised by the apparent drive-ability problems associated with it).
Other than the local dealer, who did not return my call for an estimate, the only shop in town has quoted $475 for the fronts and $425 for the rears. I have printed the JTIS and the job requires special tools. The parts are only $25 or so per corner making the vast majority of the bill labor.
I have actually replaced wheel bearings on a 911 many years ago, so it is not completely foreign to me. So, can I take this on, or is it just better to hand it off to the independent shop? In other words, if I get started and I cannot make the repair, the price just went up for a flatbed.
Thoughts? Thanks!

Alternatively, remove the hub and take it to a shop to put in the new bearing the refit yourself. I did this and was charged ~£25 labour.
Just noticed that it was your rears not fronts, above was for my fronts.
