ah yes, the high price of owning an 'R' version...brakes and shocks!
To your question, shocks are actually pretty good, the bilstein seem to last a long time. I'm at 114k, and on 3 of the original shocks. I say three...because number four lost a bushing, and it was cheaper to do the entire shock than press in/out a new bushing...otherwise, I'd have four original shocks.

I have the CATS shocks in my '00 R. They are just fine at 111k miles. I'm on my 2nd set of lower bushings and my upper mounts needs to be replaced, but the shocks ... the very very expensive shocks are ok.
Bounce each corner of the car, if the bounce continues after you let go, without dampening, then the shock is bad.
Inspect each shock. Any leak means the shock is bad.
It is my (limited) experience that everything else in this suspension, ball joints, bushings, etc will wear out long before the shocks.
