Cranking problem
My 97 XK wouldn't crank yesterday morning. I depressed the brake pedal, pushed the start button, nothing. Various displays appeared, such as an engine symbol, traction control, etc. The headlights wouldn't turn on so that I could gauge the battery condition; I assume that the engine must be running to use them.
This morning was the same story. This time the display said the brake pedal must be depressed to start the car. It was depressed, so I pushed it even harder. The car cranked and started. Anyone have an idea what is going on? BTW, I am using the terms "crank" and "start" correctly. Thanks!

"Try pressing the start button BEFORE you step on the brake pedal.
If you inadvertently pump the brake pedal before you press the start button, your brake pedal will be high and might not make contact the starter interlock switch, in which case you would need to really stand on the brake pedal when pressing the start button."
Some cars, like my LS460, require stepping on the brake pedal before pressing the start button; pressing the start button first simply won't work. If you inadvertently pump the brake pedal before you press the start button, your brake pedal will be high and might not make contact the starter interlock switch, in which case you would need to really stand on the brake pedal when pressing the start button."
Let us know if this helps.
