Default Cruise control issues

First post so here goes.
Late 2001 rhd Xkr 4.0 ltr supercharged.
I've had the car about a month but due to covid lockdown haven't been able to really go far.
Recently I managed to get it onto a motorway and everything seems fine and the car runs really well.
However I noticed that the cruise control switch on the console doesn't illuminate when pressed and the steering wheel controls don't activate.
I've read all the previous posts on cruise control issues but was hoping someone could advise where to start to diagnose this? Starting with the easiest please.
I've contacted the previous owner and he said the battery is over 7 years old. I've had no issues starting the vehicle.
My only other observation is that momentarily on ignition start up I get a Trac not available message which goes out in starting.
I have no other messages or warnings being displayed and the rear brake lights all work.
Many thanks.

Sounds like a defective.steering clockspring or its connector. Will the horn blow?
FYI the airbag connectors release by pinching the sides. It is much safer if one disconnects the battery first .
