A day of bonding with the Jag

A day of bonding with the Jag
First thing was to get the LSI pressure relief valve put back in after the dealer had finally gotten and installed the new motor/pump assembly. Having done this a couple of times now (first install on the original pump and then de-install prior to taking the car to the dealer and now re-install on new motor/pump), I can say that the 2 most difficult steps are disconnecting the black/white wire connection (the tight press fit and lack of space to work make this a pain to disconnect) and then the wiggling and patience needed to get the pump off and on the shelf if you have the tall rack.
I was ambitious after doing this so I tacked the headrest fix once again (this was about the fourth time). What I ended up deducing was that I should have done it right the first time. I had used heatshrink from Radio Shack that was clearly meant for lighter duty fixes and also did not properly shrink the tubing. So this time I used a heavier adhesive lined heatshrink tube that I got from a marine supply shop and used a small heat gun (fueled by a cigarette lighter) that worked much better than the soldering iron and hair dryer I had used the first time. The fix seems much more robust and, hopefully, this will be the last time.
All in all a nice hour or so spent tinkering with the car.

I bonded with my car today too ...gave it a 3 hour detail using all the tools and products recommended by Dave 'our detailer'. I now know all her small cosmetic imperfections.
How long to do the relief valve? That's going on my car next...even with the new hoses, its worth the peace of mind.

Doug,
Good to know that you are at it again. I do not have a headrest in my car but reading what you did and the ongoing problems with it, sounds like you took the repair to the next level. Kudos to you!
I am not sure I will be bonding or cussing with anything on Monday. I will be installing brakes on my S-Type, Bushings on my XK8, a left strut and muffler on the Rav4 and if I get time fuel filters on both Jags. Not sure it will all take place in one day but I will try. It is a matter of having the car available to work on I have all the parts but the fuel filters.
Did you get the old pump?

Hey H2OBoy--the valve install could take as little as 20 minutes but, if you are slow and methodical like me then figure 45. I forgot to mention the one other small annoyance of trying to get what is called "hose #1" into the fitting on the pump where you remove a torx screw plug. The interference from a nearby hose fitting can cause some grief.
Gus--I figure I would give the service rep a few more days to see if he could just give me the old pump versus sending it to Jaguar.

I think you guys have a funny way of bonding with your cars. I would consider what you did more like playing doctor.
I spent my "bonding" time doing a 500 mile round trip to Central Texas. Top down both ways and gorgeous weather, now THAT'S what I call bonding.
I have to share: Coming in to Houston this morning I came in behind a convertible Dodge Viper (gorgeous car!) that was moving slow in the passing lane. It was driven by a woman in a ball cap and big sunglasses (just like me), we could have been part of a club :-). Too bad she didn't stay up with me, that would have looked pretty cool, the unusual sight of two convertible semi-exotics travelling together. Hers was red, mine was blue, all we needed was a white convertible to complete the picture.
