Daytime running lights on an 03
#41
Tom,
Sorry I'm from Texas, but from what I have read, They set it up so that the Fog Lights come on when you put the Key in the ignition a stay-on until you remove the Key.....What happens at night when you turn-on the Head-Lights is all Canadian to me!
Good Luck with it!

I originally thought that using the fogs would be good, but if they are not aimed (possible?) they really annoy oncoming drivers. I am anxious to see what the dealers say. Tom :-)

I will see what the dealers say. We have two within 50 miles. I doubt that I can create “competition”, but that would be nice. Does all this work the same if the headlight switch is in the “Auto” position where the headlights come on or off based on ambient outside light? I would like the DTL’s to be automatic so I don’t forget to tun them on/off. Tom :-)

Well, I called the dealer and was told by a 17 year veteran Jaguar employee that he had never had a request to reprogram an xk8 to daytime running lights. I thought that that was interesting. Of course, soon after 2005 all cars had DTL's, so it is only those of us who have older cars that might be prospects for that service. They are going to do it and will charge $163 + Tx and I think that for me this is the best way to go. I am replacing a defective int. rear view mirror that controls the "auto" headlights before I have Jag do the DTL's. Thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions. If something more comes of it, I'll report. Tom :-)

Day Time Running Lights on an ‘05
the Canadian system is the same as the newer US cars with DRL's, high (main) beams at low power. when the headlight switch is turned to running (parking) lights, they stay on at this setting. when the switch is turned to the final setting, the high beams turn off for the low (dipped) bulbs at full power. some Scandinavian and Northern European countries specify low beams and parking lights whenever the key is turned to the run position. in this case the switch and darkness sensor only affect the dashboard illumination and activation of the high (main) beams, which will extinguish the low (dipped) beam when activated. the fog (cornering lights) are unaffected by any setup and are activated independently as long as the parking lights are on. there are only three settings that can be programmed in the settings. old US, DRL (new US and Canada) and the European.
it is actually nice with the old US system (which may also be British, please check me) that you can turn on the parking lights and just the fogs, no low beam. this eliminates the glare from fog while illuminating the road. the fogs are too low to be an effective DRL.
i may switch to the European setup as it is legal in the US to use the parking lights as long as a dipped or main beam is on. the dark blue just disappears into the background, trying to maximize my chances.

Well, I had the dealer hook up the DTL’S ($170.88, incl. TX). I am very happy with the results. Prior to this, I bought a new int, rear view mirror which solved the auto headlight problem I had been having. I Have posted a picture showing the lights in operation. :-). How about the little marker lights on the front fenders close to the doors, what turns them on? Thanks to all of you for you help and comments. Tom :-)

those markers forward of the doors are not illuminated in the American market, hence the Jaguar logo. in the European market, they are amber indicators wired to the parking light circuit, perhaps the turn signals. funny thing is that the wiring is in the fender if you feel like converting them. i personally like the logo as it is classy and minimal. before you ask, it is a DOT violation to light it, i checked.

Thanks, I noticed that there was wiring so I was wondering why neither were lit. That explains it. Saves me the trouble of bulb changes to no effect. I have seen cars on the forum where they were lit, often, it seem, white? I didn’t notice what country the cars were in. Tom :-)

I told the service advisor to hook it up as though I was taking it back to Canada, so I assume Canadian. I was also told at Jaguar that the US does not require DTL’s? I leave the headlight switch in the “Auto” position. One of the things that I like is that the taillights are on too.. That was unexpected and for me preferred over just front lights. Is that what you would expect? Can any one tell me what headlight bulbs are likely in my ‘05 (low and high beams). What are the brightest bulbs I can use, short of HID? I was interested in HID but was told in an auto electric shop in Marion, IN, (owned, by the way, by a man who owns an XKE) that trying to hook up HID lighting, is very “dangerous” running the risk of blowing one of the computer modules. Any thoughts on that? Thank again, Tom

Are you talking about my Blinkers? Light it up!!!

Strange, I always thought that the Canadian DTRL were the Fog Lights set to automatically come on as DTRL's....Didn't know it was the Low Beams & Parking Lights!!!! Why pay Jaguar to turn those on??? All you have to do is turn them on with the Light switch, if you want them on!!!
Those little Lights back by the door are what is known as Turn Signal Repeaters...They tell the folks on that side of the Car that you are planning to turn in that direction...They come with Amber Lens or some of the older XKR's have a Leaper Badge there! They are all wired for repeaters, as all you have to do is remove the Leaper and replace it with a Blinker. I have Clear Lens on mine with a Chrome Bulb that Blinks Amber....They only blink when you hit your turn signals......

Johnken, HID's?
Sorry I don't understand exactly what you have done..........Have you replaced your Low Beam HID's or have you installed HID's in your High Beams? If you have replaced your HID Low Beams, would you tell me why? and what have you done about the High Beams?
Just trying to clear my Head.....
Thanks!

6Hi Billy, I'd have sworn, given the output, the low beam's in 1998s are plain old incandescent standard bulbs. I tried replacing them with high visability, halogen, etc.. nothing made much improvement and they never provided enough light when on roads with no street lamps.
Someone on our forum posted a note about converting to HID Xenons that I mentioned.
Well for 50 bucks I gave it a try. HUGE improvement and I do not blind incoming drivers.
These units are in my low beam's. To install them I had to make room for a high voltage wire harness from the new bulb receptacle to the small external high volt transformer.
Make room means provide a slot to pass the wires out of the sealed low beam assembly. Pretty easy with a dremmel tool.
The weatherproof HV transformer is mounted nearby, there are many tie off points in there, just grab a few heavy duty wire ties.
Yes this company makes Xenons for the high beam and for the fog lights. I guess I'm happy enough with my.factory high beam's, plus the access to that bulb is quite restricted, that I never considered replacing them.
I do sometimes wonder about the fogs, it'd be really easy to install that.
Hope that helps, let me know if any other questions.
John

And there you are!
Johnken,
John, I'm sorry but I had forgotten that my 98 XK8 Coupe did not have HID Low Beams....That's what threw me off.....I was confused as to why you were replacing the Low Beams......Now I remember.....Sorry to question you about it!
If your Fog Lights use H-1 bulbs, you can get Sylvania's super bright Halogens that will really brighten up your World.....They are called Silver Star zXe and are as bright as some LED's...but they are expensive....OR....You can go to ijdmtoy.com and they have a forward facing H-1 LED bulb that has a little bulb in the end that shoots forward that works really good for about the same money! I have this new LED bulb in my 2005 XKR and it really lights up the world......
Thanks for answering my questions and Good Luck to you!

The reason I wanted the DTL's hooked up is so that when I turn the car on they are on and when I turn the car off, they go off without my having to remember to do either function. I am probably a little OCD about things like that. :-) Besides, not a single person on this forum is like this, but I like doing little things that make the car a little more the way I like it to be, but of course, NONE of you would understand that! :-)
I just checked and found that those side fender lights are as you say and they both work. :-) Another mystery solved. Thanks, Tom

I found the Kensun lights on Amazon for $40.00. I contacted Kensun requesting installation instructions. They sent me their wiring diagram. I suppose that since they are generic and work in most cars, special instructions for MY car is too much to ask from them. However, ( :-) ) maybe I can ask you for a few specifics and guidance as to the best way to hook them up. I don't want to bungle the job. One concern is how to attach (and where) the ballast so it is protected and won't come loose, and so on.
They recommended the H-1 for the low beams and parking lights and the 9005 for the high beams. On two Lexus's (2000 and 2008) that I have and had, I believe that the HID was only in the low beam (I'm not really sure of that). Is it now the thing to put them in both high and low beams?
Side question. I have been trying to change the picture in my signature info, but can't seem to figure it out. Any tips? Tom

I think that I have it now. I wasn't "uploading" the picture. :-)

Billy, good price. I wrapped the ballast in a sturdy wire tie and connected it to one of the many attachment points in the wheel well.
Do take the wheel off to do this for easy access.
The hardest part is feeding the new harness to the bulb. Billy, I tried it 2 ways.
1).drill hole in back of weather proof round cover for low beam.
2) cut a groove in the edge of the plastic cylinder (cut front to back, just enough to allow wires to pass into space between weatherproof cover and light bulb receptacle yet allow weather proof cover to screw on.
Billy both work, one better than other. See my post on this from around December 2016. Not in a place I can look it up 4u.
