From what I've read, those three are roughly equivalent. Generally the Passport is considered the best but since the K40 is essentially free (it came with the car) I'd stick with it.

All the indicator leds are installed in the instrument cluster along with various audio alerts. Cant wait to try it out.

Hope this car remains as good a deal as it appears.
EXACT same thing happened to me when I bought my XKR last year - sweet, eh?

The K40 is one of the better ones but it is very sensitive. You get used to which ones are false alarms and which ones are telling the truth. I don't use it all the time but on trips it's a life (license) saver since at 80mph my car feels like its doing 40mph.

If you ever need parts or service K40 will only allow their dealers to do the work, but I've talked to them before and they are very responsive and helpful. I needed a new sensor for the front license plate and they processed the order fast and recommended a shop nearby.

If you do drive in VA, yes they are illegal to use (not illegal to merely possess) but no they cannot confiscate your radar detector (or in this case, your car) because you have it. It is a civil fine of $40, according to a former state trooper turned traffic lawyer in Richmond. He also told me that while the VG2 radar detector sniffer is in use by the state police, not every state police car has those - in fact most do not, and they mostly are looking for truckers using them, not you and me.

I don't care what anybody says - the K40 helps, big time.

The law says you can't use it but simple possession in a vehicle is prima facie evidence that you are.
If transiting VA, pull the fuse so it doesn't emit the hetrodyne frequencies the detector detectors detect. (Had to say that!)
I don't know what the circumstances were for you, but that's not what this lawyer told me. Yes, I recommend him.

(Why are they always right?)
That's why truckers up there will carry a "throwaway" radar detector like a Radio Shack unit. Get an old one at a flea market and keep it handy in those situations, if you head back that way.
