Another day, another job. Has anyone posted a how to on dismantling the door mirror. I have removed the unit off the door and taken the glass out, but i am unsure how to progress any further. Many thanks. Anthony.

Can you tell us what precipitated this project?
I replaced the driver-side door mirror on my '03 XK8 about a month ago after the fold-back feature blew up and could not be repaired. I found a correct used replacement on eBay from a same-year donor car.
As you know by now, removal of the old mirror starts with removal of the door trim panel, including carefully disconnecting the various modular electrical connectors, speaker cover and speaker (the tweeter) so one can gain access to the mounting bolt.
Mounting the replacement mirror amounted to doing everything in reverse from the earlier process. If undamaged, the mirror housing outer cover can be carefully removed from the old mirror mount and snapped back onto the replacement mirror. Then reinstall the mirror glass. There are several useful YouTube videos on this process - here is one:
Sorry, didn't explain myself properly. The unit does not open and close though the motor is working, it does lock into place if you hold it with the motor running. I had been told it might work off some form of clutch?. What i am looking for is how to dismantle it. Many thanks . Anthony.
...... how do i check the head has not come off the peg?.
You would be able to rotate it manually towards the folded or deployed position with little resistance. The Owner's Handbook suggests re-engaging the drive peg using the switch but I've always fouind it easier to rotate the mirror head until I could feel it click back into engagement with the drive peg.
