Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrr windshield!
So I was on the way home from work yesterday and I heard a "tick" sound. Figured someone kicked up a stone or something. I went out today and sure enough there is a crack! Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Just called it in and, luckily I have a zero deductable! Woooooooo hoooooo!

are these windshields/screens still available ?
I have numerous small chips from rock throwin' SOB's even though I don't tailgate, they seem to be heat seeking missiles that I can't juke enough to miss 'em. I'm on a first name basis with my friendly windshield repairman, and expect to get his next kid named after me.

I take it then, the windscreen repair man’s wife is friendly too
Nice to hear that you have such a friendly circle of support. It’s nice that you have a shoulder to cry on when some SOB flicks a stone that cracks a USD1000 windscreen. And as Brits would say, maybe get your leg over.
Don’t they do paternity tests there in the USA though?

we have way too many 12 gauge shotguns over here, which have greatly reduced the demand for paternity testing. I'm pretty good at dodging handgun incoming. Double 00 buck-shot is another story though,

Yes it is a crack that is about 8 inches, that goes from the left side to in front of the steering wheel (left hand drive). It is covered by my insurance, because I pay for more than basic coverage and pay more for a zero deductable on the Jag. I looked around and have found a couple brand new ones for about $520 shipped, so they are available.

it is possible to obtain glass branded as the original. sometimes the insurance company specifies a lower grade replacement. the OEM for our cars is not very expensive, cost less than 250 USD. it was my experience that the aftermarket replacement was not as clear, perhaps since it is a lower volume production for them.

if you feel like a drive to NYC, the glass installer that i used is very honest. i do not know what the current pricing is; it was three years ago. when i was looking then the retail prices matched what you are getting now. please be careful what you install as my first replacement was like looking through a fishbowl. many insurance co installers use poor quality.

Yes you do need to watch what you buy'
for a start it needs to be marked, XXX Triplex Laminated.
As for the price, it depends whether its original or not. also it depends whether the car you have is the basic one without the options,
From Jaguar Classic Parts you can get the basic one for Ł344.57 part number GJA8801AE
For the none basic one with full options it will cost you Ł865.25 part number GJA8801AC
You also need to pay extra for the fixing kit and the price of a fitter.
As for the one i had fitted it was the full options one,
you pay your money and take your chance, best of luck with the cheep one's.......

Yeah the one i had replaced was the cheep one, must have been fitted by some other owner,
If you have rain sensor wipers you will see a round circle on the blacked out bit where the rear view mirror is fitted when looking at the screen from out side of the car,
if you have the heated front windscreen you should see the button next to the rear heated screen button.
None of these options are really any use to me as i never take the car out if it's raining and it's in the garage over the winter,
Possibly why some one fitted the cheaper one.

As stated above, go for the OEM type glass. The Triple XXX is Factory and they are now owned by Pilkington Glass, a worldwide company. Your installer should be able to source it. Suggest you run your car by and let them note the options and VIN to lessen the chance of mistakes. Seems there are different quality levels of A/M glass and you do not need a sub standard one. Most major insurers will pay for OEM if you INSIST. Good Luck

Ok so I went to have the windshield replaced and first thing he noticed was that the new one didn’t have the sun shade on top. Then he looked and didn’t see any with it in stock. So I said go ahead and do it. They started trying to take out the windshield and they said it looks like the trim may have been siliconed in. Drrrrrr. Needless to say they told me that the trim will probably be destroyed. Double drrrrrr! They did say that insurance would cover the replacement. I’m wondering if they just missed how the trim is held in. Is there a trick to get the front trim out? Worse case I can try to get it out myself and have a spare set 😁

When the fitter did mine he removed the wipers and the scuttle tray first, then using some sort of plastic trim remover he prised the trim up from the window,
Need to start at one end of the trim which is under the scuttle and work your way around the trim, you can tell when you are on the fixing clips as the trim is tight against the glass and needs to be popped of the clip.
Can't remember the number of clips, at a guess 10 or so hold the trim on to the glass.
When the fitter removes the glass he needs to be careful not to damage the front of your head lining (coup only).
After mine was done and fitter gone (three and a half hours to fit) i noticed it was fitted to high and the trim was slightly above the roof line, thought i could live with it but after two weeks i rang up and told them i wasn't happy with the fit, one week later another fitter came out with another window and did it all again, this time it was a perfect fit.......Forgot to mention, use two trim removers one ether side of trim to pop it off the clip.....
Both fitters commented that the window mastic can spread a bit and get a hold to the trim making it difficult to remove, to get the trim off without damage takes time and patience.

Average price of windshield is about $60-70(if you know where to buy) Add $5 for urethane. Jaguar windshield is probably 100
Labor installation 50-100 (if you know where to call). Experienced installer replaces windshield in 40 min or so.
I install windshield myself, when I need it. Tools are probably $30-40.
