Default Easy fix?

So there’s what appear to be 2 matching sensors on the cam covers at the front of the engine left and right...
the one just forward of the dipstick seems to be oozing a slight amount of oil. How do I cure this, is it just a case of tightening the sensor by screwing it in a bit? By hand or is it threaded needing a wrench? Do I need to remove the sensor first and if so how?
thanks
Alan

Sounds like you are referring to the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) solenoid O-ring seals. They bake in the engine bay heat and eventually get hard and inflexible, which allows them to begin to seep oil and air, sometimes throwing OBDII codes as a result. For me, they typically last two to three years before needing to be replaced. I last ordered them from rockauto.com in January 2019 and paid about $15 for the pair. The part number is AJ82856....

You simply pry them up with a very small flat-blade screwdriver, clean the area thoroughly, and seat the new ones into place very carefully so you do not deform them and cause them to leak right off the bat. I use the tip of a small wooden dowel to press the new ones firmly into place....

Removing all traces of oil and grime around the solenoid is key to getting a snug, seep-free fit....

Thanks so much Jon, I am guessing they are the original seals or at least 8yrs old as that’s how long I have had the vehicle!

Great topic and I have the same problem

are they just regular shaped orings or are they weird flat sided things? Because I have a whole assortment of orings I could use to match dimensions but I dont want to try and find I need a special size or shape

Alan, have a look at this advertisement and you will see it's not a regular shape.

When you change them, as stated clean the areas. BUT if i where you i would not try and put them in dry, a very light smear of white lithium grease or lube of your choice, if you try and put them in dry it will be a bear and you will most likely tear something.
