Default Engine check light on after filling with gas

Hi

Don't know what causes my check engine light to come on or how to fix it.
I have a 1999 XK8 with 43000 miles. After I fill her with gas and drive about 10 miles the check engine light comes on. So I took her to a local dealer and they told me it was the gas cap and replaced it. So I drove her with no problems until I filled her up again with gas and again the check engine light came on . How can I get the light to go off. Do I have to go to a garage and have them reset it or will this reset itself. Any help would be great

Thankyou

I'm sure that other's with more experience will chime in, but I would purchase an OBDII reader (ELM 327 on the big auction site) and download the "Torque" app to your phone.

Check for any error codes. Write them down. Delete them and then see if they reappear. It may well have been a faulty gas cap to begin with and nothing else.

hbeale54, Don't fill her up anymore! NO!! that was to obvious! I won't do that to you....but it is simple! You need to tighten the new gas cap!!! It's as simple as that...My 2000 XKR did the same thing and even my 2005 does the same thing every time my Wife fills it up.....She doesn't tighten it up enough.....I'm often seen jumping out at a stoplight and running back there to tighten the darn thing......You've gott'a tighten it real good!.....

thankyou for your reply . I did tighten the gas cap but still check engine light is on. Not sure if it has to be cleared with code reader.

You might be better off with getting the actual code. With it, you can search this forum for past instances. It's probably a gross evap leak. Gas cap is one, but it could be the purge valve in the driver side wheel well, or a number of things around that system.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

+1.

The chances that it's actually the gas cap are pretty slim. I've never understood why so many people assume it's a loose gas cap every time the CEL comes on.

Default Check engine light on

Thankyou for your feedback. I am going to purchase. A code reader to check out what the actual warning code is. Hope that it will tell me my problems. I have been just relying on what my garage had told me.

Start with a cheap ELM327 code reader from eBay. The cheapest are just a few $. Then get the corresponding app for your phone, also a few $. You can always get a better, more complete reader later...

I've experienced the gross evap leak code a number of times, and it has always been my gas cap being loose - which btw, is my favorite type of evap leak to fix!

My daughter's 2005 Toyota Matrix failed the emission. I took it to the dealer and they were not able to give me an answer, but suggested $ 800 worth of repairs.
Took the car to Autozone and the guy comes to the car and replaces the gas cap and told me to drive for 100 miles and not to reset the OBD.

A month later, I go for emission check and and it passed.

hbeale54, Take it back to the Service Writer at Jaguar....The have seen this several times a week with the X-100 cars. I bet he will know the answer. After all, he sold you a new Gas Cap that apparently doesn't work.....Bet he can fix it for you......The reason everyone is so quick to tell you that the problem is your Gas Cap, is because 99% of the time...That's what it is!!!
