Hi,
My 1999 XKR has big compression problems (between 70 to 120 in 7 bores and zero in the other) and the person who was going to repair it for me has been ill for a while now, because I'm struggling to find someone who can fix and not just claim to i'm thinking of replacing the engine.
Will an engine from an 1997 NA XK8 slot straight in without too many issues?
Does anyone have a step by step guide to replacing an engine in an XKR?
Thanks

You would also have issues with the VVT on a donor N/A motor (your car doesn't have it). Then there's EGR, etc. etc.
As xalty says, the best swop will be from a 4.0 XKR.
If your car's VIN is later than SAJJ....031303 the motor will be AJ27. The donor motor will be AJ26 if it's truly from 97.
I can't find any detail of motor R&R in the documentation. The workshop manual only covers in-vehicle repair. This thread of BobRoy's will give you an idea of what's entailed:

First thing I noticed was that you are NOT in North America (XJR first MY was 2000 in NA) so finding an engine would depend on your location.
A good-used engine that is inexpensive would NOT be cost effective if you have to have it shipped from another Country.(or Continent)
ALL 4.0 SuperCharged Jaguar engines were AJ26 until MY2000 here in NA.
The throttle of AJ26 engine will have a vacuum actuator for the speed control. The AJ26 will also only have an oil pressure switch and NO oil temp sensor.
MANY differences but the later engines are not really compatible without a BUNCH of modifications.
