Default engine oil

Good morning, My question today is what engine oil do you use(without breaking the bank) in the 4.0 super charged. Many thanks. Anthony.

My ‘02 XKR (4.0 L) is a daily driver so it accumulates enough mileage to use different viscosity oils in the summer and winter, as per the owners manual viscosity recommendations.

In the blazing hot summer I use Mobil 1 5w-40, and when temperatures occasionally get cool in the winter I use Mobil 1 0w-40.

If my summers weren’t no extreme I’d use the 0w-40 year round. The Mobil 1 0w-40 (european formula) is a very popular oil for many high performance european car brands; such as Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, etc. I also have been using it in my classic cars. It has very good wear protection . Occasionally I have Blackstone Labs do a used oil analysis, which invariably comes back as excellent with no evidence of metal wear. According to Blackstone’s oil analysis I know I could go longer between oil changes, but my comfort zone is between 4-5 thousand miles, so I stick to that . The oil is so inexpensive that I feel it’s not a burden to change that frequently.

in 4 years I’ve put 61,000 miles on the car with no mechanical issues, so my maintenance strategy is working fine. The car has 177,000 total miles.

Both oils mentioned are readily available (Walmart) and are reasonably priced ( $24.47 for a 5 qt jug).

Z

I agree with ZRay that Mobil 1 is one of the best Oils to use...I personally like just Regular Mobil 1 5W40 pretty much year around....The trick is to change it about every 5,000 to 7,000 miles including the Filter........and remember that most of the 4.2 Engines hold 8 Quarts at Oil change! . It's hard to get these Guy's to pour in 8 Quarts, as they don't believe you but if you go to the same place each time; they will soon realize it's true!

Dang zray,

Oil aside, it sure is good to hear that someone is getting so many trouble free miles. Enough reading this forum and I start feeling like the car is too fragile to drive.

Thanks for that!

They are not too fragile to drive, in fact they benefit greatly from being driven on a regular basis in order to keep the fluids and components moving and functioning properly. The issue is primarily that they require more parts and repairs than some of us would prefer. When my wife's 2006 XK8 was her daily driver (early February 2012 until late October 2018), I spent more time working on that car than I did with our three other vehicles combined....
