Engine starts then dies

Engine starts then dies
2000 XKR - After replacing my EGR valve I went about a half mile when my car died like it was out of gas. It fires up normally but will only run for a few seconds. I am not getting any codes. Fuel pressure is OK. I have checked all the fuses and relays. There are no vacuum leaks. I checked the resistance of the coolant temperature sensor, crankshaft position sensor, both camshaft position sensors where they plug into the ECM and all are OK. I have tried a battery disconnect and hard reset. I have tried running with the EGR valve unplugged. I took everything back apart to see if I screwed up somewhere and didn't find anything wrong. Any suggestions on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

You seem pretty thorough, you'll find the problem.

I have a fuel presure gauge with pressure release valve. After I turn the key on pressure comes up to 42 psi and stays there after the engine fires and dies. Pressure doesn't bleed off for days.
BTW, I observed that the throttle butterfly valve moves closed and then to slightly open when I turn the key to ignition (looks normal). But when I turn the key off butterfly closes, opens a little, closes, opens to about 10%, then closes. Is that normal?

This can be a few things, the first would be a collapsed catalyst blocking the exhaust. It could also be the ignition module if this car has one. These modules have a start and a run mode. Your run mode might be bad. I can't remember if the 4.0 has a module or just fires from the ECM....someone will know.

This applies to XKR models with two fuel pumps only. As it turns out the number 2 fuel pump was bad. Number 1 pump runs with the starter and as required for power only, thats why my car would start and run briefly. I removed the relay for Number 1 and hot wired pin 5 directly to the battery and got the car running. It was in restricted performance though with a code of fuel pump relay fault (d**m thing new I removed the relay). These cars are too smart. Replacing the fuel pumps was really fun - more on that later.
