Default Engine ticking on startup

Hi MY 01 XKR with 80K has developed a fairly loud ticking sound on cold startup especially when slowing idle by putting in gear. Secondary tensioners have been replaced. Sound is most prevelent with stethescope on intercoolers and throttle body. Is anyone familiar with this. Thank you.

Could be a sticking pintle on one or more fuel injectors - on start up... Were the primary tensioners and guide rails replaced?

No, just the secondaries and they were actually still perfect. The noise does not seem to be coming from the front of engine. Thanks.

The S/C can make a ticking sort of sound. Have you checked/changed the oil?

I'm with CC on this one. Check the supercharger oil by removing the level plug located in the front left of the unit. Kind of tight quarters up there. I think it's 3mm. You can buy supercharger oil at your GM dealer suitable for the Eaton unit. If nothing else, it will be one less thing to worry about!

need to hear it to make a learned guess - maybe record it and upload to youtube as most members do with a foreign noise - superchargers make a noise coming off revs, with no load, in this case it'll be a worn coupler....

I listened to your ticking knock and it sounds the same as mine. Does your noise go away after a couple of minutes. I was not aware that the supercharger was not supplied by engine oil. I suspose the blower would have to be removed to change oil. Has anyone done it?

Yes it goes away after a few minutes and is only most noticeable at idle in gear.
Yes mine sounds just like it's coming from the SC. It's not the supercharger or it's oil. I checked the oil and the dealer removed the SC belt, the noise was still there. The dealer said the noise sounded like it was coming from below when they lifted the car to listen to it. They had no ideas what it is even with $$ in ther eyes but they could only liten to it for a few minutes before it went away and then would have to let the engine cool down for a couple of hours and then get less time before it went away again.

I have had it for 7 years and 25k miles.
Keep working on it and let me know if you find the problem or a solution.

One of the first things I asked at the dealer after buying my 2005 XKR from a private party had to do with the ticking I hear for maybe 30 seconds or so after starting up a cold engine. To me it sounds similar to a sticking lifter in old American cars I have owned. The dealer did not say what the sound was but identified it as "normal". I asked again the next time I brought it in for servicing (just before the SE warranty ran out) and again the response was "normal".

I still don't know what this is but it sure sounds the same as a sticky lifter, although there aren't any lifters in these engines.

Hi; I looked on E-Bay for supercharger oil, there are many suppliers and they sell kits with 8oz oil, the superchargers evidently hold approx 6oz, and a syrenge for evacuating and refilling oil, and plastic gloves, evidently the old oil is nasty. The kits are around 35 bucks. I'm going to get a kit and change mine. I'll keep you posted. However after reading the last post it probably wont help, but it cant hurt. Thanks. Tom.

The Eaton holds around 7oz if you get all of the old stuff out. The procedure is to add oil until it starts running out of the fill hole.

Should also be done cold, as the oil expands as it heats up.

And yes, the old stuff is pretty foul.

Hi; I recieved my SC oil change kit today and changed the oil this evening. The old oil was dark but not nasty. After zip tying the hose and wires out of the way I removed the plug with a 3/16 allen bit and a 1/4 ratchet end wrench. it is very difficult to get a hose in to suck the oil out as you run right into the gears. I actually used a piece of shrink tubing and adapted with various tubing to fit the supplied syringe. It took a good hour playing with the apparatus to get 6 1/3 oz out. Easier to put it in with the syringe. Had absolutly no effect on the noise. In thinking back the noise kind of reminds me of the low idle knock on early 302 Fords before they changed the timing order. My older Chevrolet 350 Vortex pickup has a similar knock when cold, but on both of them the noise defenately came from the bottom. Thanks for the suggestions I guess I'll just live with it. At laest I have new oil in my SC.
