this is a little off subject but not way off. My 18" tires are 245's on the front and 255's on the rear. To prolong tire wear by having the ability to rotate front to back...is it possible to run 255's on both the front and the backs even though the front rim width is a little narrower than the backs? or same theory but 245's front and back with a slightly narrower tire on the slightly wider rear rims. What type of potential failure would result from the use of a tire / rim that is narrower/wider by 10mm (less than 1/2 inch)

Tim, I would look like ****, the back tire/wheel combo on a XK already looks too small unless its a 20" OR LARGER 18" like a 275/40/18. Did you really buy a Jaguar to save money and be conservative???????

 

Yes Brutal, ideally would love to go much wider on the rears but limited resources require unwanted but prudent decisions on how to spend. If I had called Suzy Orman to get permission to buy my used cat when I did, she would have made a mockery of my request. I have no reqrets even though things will be tight for another 3 yrs before it's paid off. It gives me great pleasure to drive and just as much pleasure in a different way to just look at it, like admiring a masterpiece sculpture. I don't think I'll ever tire of it's beauty but would love to extend my tire life.

 

meh just save where you can and spend where you want....
buy cheaper tires like sumitomo's or Avons, or buy used. I sell really good used tires to a local used tire shop as we dont repair tires and replacing misamatched on preowned cars.
Le tyou wife or GF take the car when on empty and have them fill it up..

 

Mounting the same size tire on different rim widths will result in different characteristics depending on the rim width.

If you are going to do this, it would be better to buy 2 more rims to match two of the existing rims. If you have a full size spare, you might only have to buy 1 rim.

Of course you have to decide which combination you are going to run, and if there are clearance problems on either end.

Also be aware that you will move closer to the oversteer end of the spectrum, but not as extreme as your original idea of rotating the fats to the front.

 

Maybe the better solution is to look for a touring/all season tire instead of a summer/high performance tire? Its kind of a guess on my part. Anybody have any ideas? I have decided on the Hankook EVO. For my application they seem to be the best combination of price point and performance and the best price I found was under 700.00 delivered.

I agree with Brutal Buy the right size and go with a brand such as Kumho or one of the lower price Companies. I've run Kumho's on three of my vehicles with fantastic results 50,000 to 60,000 miles I've now have a set on my Lexus, a performance tire It's holding up very well, and performs great.
