front subframe bracket bolts sheared
Hi
I'm dropping the front subframe and there are two bolts through a steel bracket that connects the front of the subframe to the chassis (numbered 1 in the attached image). These seem to have sheared a captive nut off, I can't see exactly what is happening but I can see the other end of the bolt through a hole in the box section spinning when I try to loosen the bolt.
Any ideas how to get these out? I'm hesitant to cut the heads off the bolts as there is no gap between them and the bracket.

What a pita! You have no choice but to cut them off some how and keep the bracket damage to a minimum. You will want to repaint the brackets anyway.
My bolts sheared off, then the captive nuts also sheared off when I will drilling out the sheared bolts.
Both sides were the same.
Here is what eventually came out.
Next I cut out holes.
Made up these.
Then tacked them in position and check they were in the correct position with the bracket.
I then got a pro welder to come round and weld them in properly.

Yeah PITA is right- so far I've had pretty good luck with bolts not shearing. Then I rounded the vee-mount bolts..

From memory it was not that thick, no more than 2mm and perhaps a bit less. I did not have a gas set up for my mig at the time and was using flux core wire so did not want to do the job myself, especially as its upside down.
If doing it again with my gas set up I would have a go, however welding upside down is a pain.
