Front wheel bearing replacement - Jaguar specialist job?
I think one of my front wheel bearings needs replacing (I would probably have both done) and, looking at related threads on here it appears to be quite a tricky job for the home mechanic.
My question is, if I can source the parts, could it be done by the guy down the road who services my wife's Renault (as it happens, he has just replaced her wheel bearings), or is it really a job for a (much more expensive) Jaguar specialist?

You do need special tools (ABS ring/nut socket) which your average shop probably will not have and make sure when you get the bearings, get a kit, you will also need to replace the circlips, you also get a grease spreader (plastic ring) that goes between the hub and bearing, these all come in the kit and not with just the bearings.

It is high, but unsurprising from a dealer, I charge about £400 for both sides all in, you take a bit of a gamble with wheel bearings, sometimes they are easy sometimes they are not. I have done one side before in just over an hour, where as I have done another that took me 5 hrs..... I would find a good indy rather than a main dealer.

Second quote from an indy 3 miles away from the dealer: £200 labour & £100 parts. That's pretty much half price!

I just found the special tool on eBay for £85, so £300 total seems like a bargain to get the whole job done, including parts, without any hassle and without getting dirty.

Incidentally, the only reason I would go through Jagutech rather than XKRacer is that my parents live near Jagutech. I never go to Norfolk where XKRacer is, though I did actually buy my XKR in Norwich

Low moan transmission? Abs?
Jaguar 1998 XJ8 102,000 MILES. -- My daughter drove her car's front brakes to death. During driving there were horrible sounds. She was using the transmission and handbrake to slow down the car. I had to replace the rotors and pads. Took the car out thereafter, during a climb on a slight hill, down shifted, leveled out on the hill at 50 mph, up shifted, went down a hill, back up in drive, no problems....came to a stop to pick her up. Total drive - 2 miles...then...
1) Put in park with ignition on...
2) Waited 3 minutes...
3) Went to put it in drive to move forward...
4) Shifter would not move. Turned car off and on...still nothing.
5) Called towing...While waiting and being distracted from someone, the tow truck driver did something to get the car moving forward. He drove it up on the flatbed.
6) Mechanic test drove it and found nothing.
7) Drove it home, had to make a U-Turn to park, turned left into a driveway, made a low moan, when going over the slight uphill driveway.
8) Put into reverse and it made a quite loud, grinding, metal sound.
9) Took it in and had to have the front left bearing replaced.
10) Came home, turned into driveway and sounds again.
Could it be anything to do with the brakes, transmission?
Please, please help us.
Respectfully, Laurie and Alexandria

I had this with my XK, I've done bearings before so I thought easy, wack it off, borrow a press and on again... oh no.
For some reason you need a special tool to remove the ABS rotor (which is also the hub nut). I had all the parts and realised this... £100 for the tool or £150 for specialist to fit. I paid the specialist assuming he would have all the other tools an ex Jag dealer mechanic told me you'd need and he didn't.
Could have done it myself.
If you know what you're doing and changed bearings before buy the tool and do it yourself (some clubs let you rent one) if not pay someone, I will be buying one next time.
Most of the time the ABS rotor needs replacing and be careful not to damage ball joints as they are pressed into the wishbones. Also take care when removing the ABS sensors as these cost around £100.
Thanks.
