Fuel Pump Adventure

Fuel Pump Adventure
Greetings!
After completing the full rebuild of the 2000 XKR's engine, and getting it into the car (Halleluia!!!) with everything hooked up, it wouldn't fire.
Went through the typical items like fuel in the tank, spark, relays, fuses, inertia switch, but no go. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rails and NOTHING. So replaced the fuel filter thinking it is full of crap from bad gas. Still no pressure or sound from the pumps in the tanks. I am now pulling the tank to get out the pumps to replace them.
Following the JITS and am at the point of disconnecting the fuel lines under the car. Unfortunately, it appears there is a heat shield above the rear end that obscures the line connectors and I cannot even see the place where the lines go through the trunk to the tank. Of course the JITS has nothing in reference to any heat shields needing removal.
Has anyone else run into this issue? Other than cutting the car above the pumps (not a preferred option for me), what did you do to get to the fittings? Can the tank be tipped or moved sufficiently to get to the pumps?
Car is a convertible.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

As above, or
.
Also, the XKR through 2002 has 2 fuel pumps. The primary is mainly used alone, except that the secondary is for heavy loads.
There is failsafe though in that if the car detects a faulty primary pump relay, it will switch to normal operation using the secondary fuel pump until the primary is serviced.
To do this, remove fuel pump relay 1 in the trunk fusebox. Then attempt to restart about 6 times, after which the car should run again entirely on the secondary pump. If this works, it is also pretty good confirmation of a failure of fuel pump 1.

Thanks for the links and tips. I was aware of the dual pumps on the car, and had tried both swapping relays to be sure they were OK, and also made at least six attempts to see if the backup system would kick in. No go.
Since the car had been sitting with a fairly full tank while the rebuild was going on, it may have been too much ethanol exposure for the pumps and they crapped out. I will be testing them out of the car before I spring for the new ones, just to be sure.
Speaking of which, what generally available non-OEM pumps have folks found at a decent price?
Thanks again.

Tank is out!
Thanks to the two resources, the tank is now out and the pumps removed. Put 12v power to them on the bench and total silence. Both are fried.
Those fuel line connections are a real challenge to get to and coax to release. I broke one of my release tools but still managed to get them both.
Now for some more parts shopping. Anyone have a non-OEM brand to recommend?
Thanks again.

I am not sure what brand it is, but I have seen positive reviews of the pumps at Welsh (about $100 vs $400 OEM) Welsh Enterprises, Inc - Jaguar XK8 / XKR (97-06) Fuel/Emissions Fuel Tank, Fuel Delivery & Return Parts - Fuel Pump
Watch out for Airtex pumps....they fit but do not have a flange at the end of the hose attachment pipe and I have heard cases of them popping off under pressure.

Bosch pumps
Thanks for the suggestion. I also found an eBay vendor that lists a Bosch pump fitting the XKR with a fairly good price and free shipping.
I respect Bosch quality on most things, and wonder if anyone has experience using a Bosch fuel punp like this. It appears these in-tank pumps have been used on many different cars, so compatibilty should be reasonable. Right?
As always, any comments are appreciated.
