Fuel Pump again, Really(?)

Fuel Pump again, Really(?)
I know there has been a number of discussion on fuel pump replacements, as a solution, how-to, etc. Now I'm wondering if any others have faced my problem. I just heard from my mechanic and I have a second fuel pump failure in 6 months. I have a 2003MY so I know the fuel pump is different from older years, but is it that fragile?
I think my car may have sat idle for some time before it came up for sale, which could explain the first replacement. But it shouldn't have failed a second time in 5000 mile over 6 months of less than daily use, but regular. To be honest I'm not sure where my mechanic got the first replacement. And that may have something to do with the issue, but at least he's replacing it under warranty.
Question to the forum, anyone else burn up fuel pumps, and if so why?
thanks
Mike
