Default Gas smell in trunk

Hello,

I took my car to have new tires installed. I've suspected faint gas smell in the trunk after drive but was never certain. Today was the first day that someone else said exactly the same. It was a hot day, I had just driven the car to the installer and he opened the trunk to pull out the spare and immediately felt he was smelling some gas.

Any suggestion on possible issues? Should i get it professionally inspected, can I do some basic inspection by removing the gas tank cover? All the videos on fuel line removal to free the gas tank suggested the use of special tool and a high level of difficulty on this car.

Thanks
-Bhaskar

Removing the interior cover panel will give you access to the fuel tank. The parts blowup below gives you an idea of what you are looking at.
Follow this link to the SNG Barratt parts page and you can match part numbers and see where hoses and gaskets are. https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#.../assembly/9470

Chillyp,
Once you’ve removed the trunk rear carpet cover and steel panel, you will see the whole fuel tank and filler pipe system. The tank sits on a 2mm thick foam insulation sheet. If there is a tank leak, perhaps from a very fine perforation, then the foam layer will be damp and deformed. See highlighted in pic. This is the first thing to look for.

Thank you all so much. After a lot of experimentation myself I took it to a local shop run by just an individual who specializes in Jaguars. He didn't come up with anything his suggestion which I'm taking is to get a new gas cap. If that doesn't work the shop suggested a smoke test which would cost me $$. Appreciate all the help.

In retrospect probably should have tried the new gas tank cap as the first step.
